About Us

Our History

Founded in 1917 as the Amateur Gardeners’ Club, the Connecticut Valley Garden Club has long been dedicated to promoting excellence in garden design, horticulture, and the art of gardening. Renamed the Connecticut Valley Garden Club (CVGC) in 1923, the Club became a founding member of the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut in 1929 and joined The Garden Club of America in 1933.

Our Work Today

Today, CVGC continues its tradition of fostering knowledge, creativity, and civic engagement through conservation, horticulture, photography, and floral design. Since our first community project in 1923 with Hartford’s North Street Settlement, our members have raised funds and volunteered to enhance public spaces throughout Greater Hartford.

Major initiatives include:

  • The Centennial Heritage Rose Garden at Elizabeth Park (the Club raised $100,000)
  • Ongoing support for Auerfarm, the Harriet Beecher Stowe House, Hill-Stead Museum, Riverfront Recapture, KNOX, the Noah Webster House, and Colt Park.

Some recent civic relations projects...

These reflect our commitment to community beautification, environmental stewardship, and collaboration with local partners throughout Greater Hartford.

Hartford Firehouse Beautification: Installed plantings, planters, and seating at Engine Companies #1, 2, 7, 8, 10, 11, and 14, supported by local garden club initiatives.

Colt Park Tree Restoration: Underwrote and led crowdfunding campaigns to replace chestnut trees at Colt Park and raised $50,000 for improvements in Bushnell, Colt, Keney, and Charter Oak Parks, with the involvement of community garden clubs.

Elizabeth Park Heritage Rose Garden: Restored the garden through the Set to Celebrate fundraiser (2011–2019), contributing $100,000 and providing $1,000 in annual maintenance and continued capital improvements, bolstered by efforts from the local garden club.

Auerfarm Nourishing Garden & Healing Meals Youth Project: Donated $11,500 to support the garden expansion and youth partnership between the 4-H Education Center at Auerfarm and Healing Meals Community Project, with contributions from members of the garden club.
